When I was in undergraduate school, I began having these one-sided headaches. They got to be so frequent that I was having about 1-2 per week. I would often feel nauseous and sometimes vomit. To deal with them, I would climb into bed in a dark room and try to sleep it off. They really interfered with my studying and my social life. So, I started on the medical path to treat these headaches. I had my eyes examined and my vision was fine. I went to an EENT thinking it was sinus or allergy related; they couldn't find a cause.

I ended up at a headache clinic in Boston where I began a series of drug therapies. One medication caused me to gain about 10 pounds, with no change in the headaches. I tried breathing oxygen from a mask and oxygen tank when I felt a headache coming on. Not only did that not help my headaches, it wasn't very cool wheeling an oxygen tank around the dorm. The final straw was to try Lithium. But, I remember the words the doctor said when he suggested it. "We'll have to draw blood periodically to make sure you're in the therapeutic window, because not enough won't do anything and too much could kill you." I knew then this was not the right path for me. Although the Imitrex injection I was taking when I got a headache was effective at eliminating it, I was concerned about the long term effects of this drug.

My pharmacist then suggested that I try the chiropractor down the street. No one in my immediate family had ever been to a chiropractor, but we gave it a try. After my first adjustment with her, I went 3 weeks without a headache! I couldn't believe it. It was then that I began pursuing more information about what it took to become a chiropractor.

Dr. Sandy's children: Nick, Jack and TJToday, I rarely have a headache. I have found that the combination of chiropractic adjustments, diet, massage and exercise keep me headache free!

I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Psychology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York and my Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Northwestern College of Chiropractic.  I love working with pregnant women, children and families.

Can babies with colic be helped with chiropractic?
It's probably one of the times a parent feels the most helpless. But based on the research, chiropractic and colic relief appear to go hand in glove. With success rates in the mid-90% range, more and more Elk River parents are seeing a chiropractor. If you have a baby with colic learn how chiropractic may help.
How could chiropractic help a stomach problem?
Chiropractic works by locating and reducing areas of the spine compromising nerve communications between your brain and your body. If nerves to or from your stomach are irritated, your stomach won't work right. Chiropractors find the source of the interference, reduce it and allow your body to work as designed.
